Can You Work as a Makeup Artist in the Czech Republic Without a Guarantor?

In the Czech Republic, the profession of a makeup artist is classified as a free trade ("volná živnost"). This is because makeup application is not considered an invasive procedure and does not fall under crafts that require mandatory vocational certification. For example, you can register your business under code 90 - "Personal Appearance Services".

However, if you want to obtain this license without a guarantor (i.e. a qualified person officially registered with your license who takes responsibility for your expertise), you must prove either formal education or relevant work experience. Without one of these, the trade office will not approve your license.

There are 3 main legal pathways:

1. Completion of an accredited makeup course recognized by the Ministry of Education (MŠMT), provided the course leads to a qualification accepted by the trade office.

2. Requalification course in "Cosmetician" (code 69-030-M) and successful passing of the exam under the
National Qualifications Framework (NSK). This option allows you to offer a wide range of beauty services, including makeup artistry, without needing a guarantor.

3. Proof of at least one year of professional experience - such as an employment contract, a foreign trade license, or a confirmation from a former employer.

If you have neither education nor experience, the only option is to work under a guarantor - a qualified person who is temporarily linked to your license. This is legal but less stable long-term, as the guarantor can withdraw at any time, requiring you to reprocess your license.

What Types of Makeup Services Are the Most Profitable and In-Demand?

Once you begin working, you'll quickly discover that the most in-demand types of makeup in the Czech Republic are:

Bridal makeup - the most profitable and also the most demanding. Clients are willing to pay more for flawless results. It often includes a trial session and makeup for bridesmaids or the mother of the bride.
Evening makeup – popular during the holiday season, balls, corporate parties, or birthdays. It allows for more creativity.
Daytime makeup - a natural, versatile style suitable for photo shoots, business meetings, or social events.
Specialized fields like grimage and body art are also profitable, especially when working with production companies, photographers, or modeling agencies.

Offering on-location services - at a client’s home, hotel, or photoshoot - is a major advantage. Clients highly value this, especially for weddings and special occasions.

It’s also true that most clients want both makeup and hairstyling. You can either learn both skills or team up with a professional hairdresser/stylist. Working as a team allows you to serve more clients at once and increase your earnings.

Continuous Learning & Finding the Right Course

Makeup artistry is a fast-evolving field. New brands, textures, tools, and techniques appear constantly. To stand out, a makeup artist must go beyond basic application and be able to create:

- long-lasting results
- looks tailored to the client’s age, skin type, and face shape
- styles aligned with current trends and personality

There are dozens of modern techniques even just for eye makeup - like halo eyes, cut crease, lifting lines, or watercolor shading. At the same time, outdated methods like heavy matte foundation, harsh transitions, overly drawn brows, or extreme contouring should be avoided. Today’s clients want to look fresh, natural, and youthful.
To stay competitive, ongoing education is key.

On LadyPraha.cz, you’ll find a curated selection of makeup courses across the Czech Republic - suitable for beginners and advanced artists alike.

You can filter courses by:
location (e.g. Prague, Brno, other cities)
start date
course price
language of instruction (Czech, English, or other)
type of study (online / in-person, group / individual)
MŠMT accreditation (optional - for official certification)

Choose the course that fits your goals and take the next step toward a legal, confident, and professional makeup career in the Czech Republic.
